Treatment Description

A thorough examination of the veins as a starting point

Varicose veins—swollen, sac-like bulges in the veins—most commonly form on the lower limbs and are primarily caused by a loss of elasticity in the vein walls. Due to the incompetence of the venous valves, blood flow back toward the heart is impaired, and the vein gradually dilates and weakens under the pressure of the blood column. The result is varicose veins of various sizes, ranging from initially small, so-called spider veins, to large, so-called trunk veins, which can form bumps on the skin’s surface and bleed profusely if injured. The prerequisite for successful sclerotherapy is therefore, first and foremost, a detailed examination, followed by treatment of the trunk vein first and then gradual treatment of the lateral branches in the form of smaller veins.

At the very first signs—such as evening swelling around the ankles, numbness in the calves, or small spider veins—it is advisable to undergo a vascular examination to objectively assess the condition of the veins, particularly in the lower limbs, and, if necessary, to undergo therapy in the form of consistent compression. Similarly, this examination is necessary before any procedure performed on varicose veins. What may seem like a trivial cosmetic issue at first glance can, over time, lead to serious health complications. These can only be prevented through a thorough vascular examination that rules out any contraindications.

It is important to move around after treatment

We perform sclerotherapy on an outpatient basis, so it places minimal strain on the body. We inject a special sclerosing solution into the affected vein, which breaks it down, gradually closes it off, and eventually transforms it into connective tissue. As a result, the vein becomes invisible on the skin’s surface and is gradually absorbed by the body.

For the treatment itself, we recommend that clients wear loose-fitting pants and shoes. It is also best to park some distance away from our clinic. Immediately after the treatment, compression bandages are applied to the treated limb, and a walk of at least 30 minutes is recommended. Exercise is also important in the days that follow. Walking or cycling is best. On the other hand, you should avoid jumping and other activities that involve sudden impacts on the legs. Standing in one place for long periods and using the sauna are also not recommended.

Thorough compression therapy is essential

Follow-up compression therapy plays a major role in the success of sclerotherapy. Immediately after the procedure, we therefore apply a compression bandage to the limb, which the patient must keep on for several days. In the weeks that follow, the patient must wear special compression stockings during the day; during the first week, these should be removed only for personal hygiene, and thereafter they should also be worn at night.

Compression is essential to prevent blood from flowing back into the sclerosed vein, which could cause it to reopen. Generally speaking, the longer and more consistent the subsequent compression therapy, the more successful and effective the sclerotherapy will be.

Beauty and health benefits in one

After the procedure, you may experience some redness or small bruises, which will disappear completely within a few days. Depending on the extent of the varicose veins, the sclerotherapy can be repeated after approximately 4 weeks.

The primary benefit of successful sclerotherapy is an improved quality of life for the patient. Another added benefit is, of course, an improvement in the aesthetic appearance of the limbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes varicose veins?

Many factors contribute to the development of this type of venous disease. The most significant include genetic predisposition, poor lifestyle habits, obesity, smoking, hormonal fluctuations, lack of physical activity, prolonged sitting or standing, and high blood pressure. Problems also often occur or worsen during pregnancy.

What medications should be avoided after sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy must not be performed on patients taking warfarin or other anticoagulant medications that affect blood clotting.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

This varies greatly from person to person. For some, the injection itself may be uncomfortable, but you should not feel any pain afterward.

Who should not undergo sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is not suitable for immobile individuals, those with acute vein inflammation, systemic infections, acute heart disease, or for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

When can I evaluate the results?

You can assess the results no sooner than one month after the treatment itself, when a visible improvement in appearance occurs.
