Red light therapy is a technique that uses short-wavelength red light to treat skin problems or reduce wrinkles and scars.
Just as plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into energy, high-intensity LEDs emitting light at a specific wavelength produce a natural biostimulating effect in human tissue. Thanks to this increased energy, our cells can function more efficiently and have a greater capacity for regeneration.
Red light improves skin texture and increases the body’s natural collagen levels. It penetrates deep into the skin and significantly affects sebum production, thereby reducing inflammation in acne-prone skin. It also aids in wound healing—it reduces inflammation in cells, stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, and increases the number of fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen in our skin, maintain connective tissue, and are an integral part of wound healing) in the skin.
No special preparation is required for the red light treatment. A trained nurse will cleanse your skin and, if necessary, remove your makeup. She will then apply a mask suited to your skin type and the purpose of the treatment, and you will spend 10 minutes relaxing under the therapeutic red light. During this time, the nourishing ingredients in the mask are actively absorbed into your skin through the action of the light. After the treatment, you can immediately return to your daily activities; there is no recovery time required.
You will discuss the number of consecutive treatments required with the nurse during a personal consultation, based on your specific concerns or desired outcome. For example, when used to support acne treatment, this is generally a long-term process in which visible results appear gradually. Red light therapy is a successful adjunct to the primary treatment of this skin condition.
As we age, our bodies gradually lose the ability to produce new collagen, which manifests as wrinkles and a decline in the quality of our hair and nails. Collagen is also important for wound healing and scar formation. However, it is not enough to simply consume specific amino acids or collagen through diet; it is also necessary to simultaneously stimulate collagen production. And that is precisely what red light of a specific wavelength is used for.
All of our body’s processes are synchronized according to a 24-hour biorhythm known as the circadian rhythm, which we can regulate ourselves by avoiding blue light (from phone, computer, and TV screens) before bed, and by not exposing ourselves to intense light immediately upon waking in the morning. Several scientific studies have already demonstrated improved sleep quality with regular use of red light phototherapy.
You can undergo the treatment once a week for 20 minutes.
Red light sends an impulse to our cells that helps them return to their basic function, which has multiple effects on various types of cells. This is called the regulation of cellular metabolism.
At the skin level, red light acts on our basic cells, known as fibroblasts. These cells are found in the middle layer of our skin, the dermis, and are responsible for producing collagen, elastic fibers, and hyaluronic acid—in other words, for the skin’s internal hydration. Fibroblasts produce these three elements to restore our skin’s radiance, gradually soften wrinkles and fine lines, and firm and tighten our skin. Red light also affects blood microcirculation.
More than 4,000 scientific studies have been published highlighting the positive effects of this light on our cells. The first studies date back to 1903, thanks to a Danish physician who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering that certain types of light can treat specific conditions.
Red light is used not only in dermatology and cosmetic surgery but is also widely used in physical therapy.
Red light therapy is a completely natural process in which we expose the skin to levels of light that are not harmful. Infrared LEDs produce non-ionizing forms of radiation. This means that devices used for this therapy do not pose the same risks as UV light. For this reason, there is virtually no risk of side effects with this therapy.
