Cryotherapy involves the application of liquid nitrogen, which has a boiling point of -195.6 °C; in effect, this freezes the treated area. For dermatologists today, liquid nitrogen treatment is the most effective tool in successfully combating warts. This method also reduces the likelihood that warts will spread to other parts of the body.

Cryotherapy can be used on all types of warts. It can remove genital warts, but it cannot cure them; warts on other parts of the body will most likely not reappear. 

Most warts, with the exception of very small ones or those on the hands, require more than one treatment. Overall, wart removal usually requires between 1 and 6 treatment sessions, which are performed once every 2 to 3 weeks over the course of several months.

Treatment without the need for anesthesia

By freezing tissue with liquid nitrogen, we most commonly remove viral, genital, and senile warts. Depending on the intensity of the treatment, various effects are achieved—ranging from mild irritation and redness, through peeling, to the formation of blisters. This is a slightly painful procedure that does not require prior anesthesia. The doctor uses a cotton swab to apply liquid nitrogen to the wart and the surrounding skin. It feels similar to touching the area with an ice cube, and the application takes only a few seconds. 

Eventually, a scab will form at the site, which will later fall off. Do not try to remove it before the scab is ready to fall off on its own. After treatment, there should be no scars, or only very faint marks.

Zero recovery time

Cryotherapy for warts is a good option if you have fair skin – this method can cause scarring in people with darker skin, or if you have a wart on your face—you’re less likely to develop a scar than you would with other removal methods.

This treatment requires no recovery time; you can go home immediately after the procedure and resume your normal activities, including showering and bathing. The treated area should not become infected, but keep an eye on it for a few days after the treatment. If you notice any redness or swelling, contact your doctor.
