Gynecomastia in men

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia refers to the benign enlargement of the mammary glands in men and is usually associated with being overweight, i.e., an increase in body mass. It can occur on both sides, or on just one side. It can also be caused by an imbalance in the ratio of estrogen and androgen, i.e., sex hormones. Gynecomastia often occurs naturally during certain stages of life (in newborns, during puberty, and in old age).

There is a solution for gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can grow to a size similar to that of a woman's breast. It is also often associated with obesity, in which fat accumulates in the enlarged gland.

There are two ways to treat gynecomastia: one is hormone therapy, and the other is plastic surgery. By combining laser liposuction (i.e., fat removal) with the surgical removal of the enlarged breast tissue, our clinic delivers excellent results.

Who is this procedure intended for?

Gynecomastia removal surgery is suitable for men over the age of 18 who have enlarged breast tissue due to hormonal changes. In most cases, we combine this procedure with liposuction. We opt for liposuction alone only when the patient has only subcutaneous fat and there is no need to remove the breast tissue.

What results can be expected?

Results are visible as early as the first dressing change. The final results are achieved after 4–6 weeks, depending on the individual healing process.

How is the procedure performed?

In cases of mild gynecomastia, it is usually sufficient to remove the fatty tissue from the breast using liposuction. 

In a standard procedure, we remove the entire mammary gland, which we supplement by suctioning fat from the subcutaneous tissue surrounding the gland. The surgical incision is made around the areola. For smaller procedures, an arc in the lower half of the areola is sufficient; for larger ones, it is also necessary to reduce the skin envelope of the breast. We perform this procedure under local anesthesia. Hospitalization is not required.

Recovery

You must wear compression garments for at least 3–4 weeks after the procedure. These garments help reduce swelling, and you may only remove them to shower. For more extensive surgeries, we use dissolvable sutures, so there is no need to have them removed. For the first week after the procedure, you must rest at home. The following week, depending on the nature of your job, you may resume a lighter work schedule. Full physical activity is possible after about 6 weeks; we recommend waiting at least 2 months after the procedure before resuming sports activities.

Do not take any medications containing acetylsalicylic acid for 3 weeks before surgery, as it affects blood clotting.

Pre-procedure instructions

You should arrive for the procedure with your chest freshly shaved. There is no need to fast; please eat and drink as you normally would. 

You should also avoid any acute illnesses, such as a cold or the flu, for two weeks before the surgery. We recommend that smokers quit for a while, as smoking significantly slows down the healing process.

We also recommend that clients undergoing this procedure arrange for someone to accompany them and for transportation by private car.
