Pigmentation Formation

Pigment spots are one of the most common cosmetic skin imperfections that can affect a person’s appearance and self-confidence. Pigment spots form when melanin (the dark pigment present in the skin) accumulates in certain areas, creating irregular dark patches. This phenomenon is called hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation can appear on various parts of the body, most commonly on the face, hands, feet, and décolletage.

Types of Pigment Spots

There are several types of pigmented spots, which differ in nature and cause. The most common types include:

  • Lentigo—also known as “age spots” or “sunspots.” This type of pigmented spot is caused by long-term exposure to sunlight and often occurs in older individuals. The spots are usually brown or dark brown in color and can appear on the face, hands, and other parts of the body.
  • Melasma – a type of pigmentation that is more common in women than in men. This type of discoloration is associated with hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy or while taking hormonal birth control. Melasma usually appears as dark spots on the face, particularly on the forehead, nose, upper lip, and cheeks.
  • Ephelides—better known as “freckles”—are a hereditary trait. These spots are often light brown and can appear on various parts of the body, particularly the face, arms, back, and chest. Ephelides usually become more pronounced after exposure to sunlight.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark spots that form at the site of healed inflammation, such as after acne, eczema, or minor skin injuries. They are more common in darker skin types and usually fade on their own over time, though very slowly.
  • Café-au-lait spots—light to medium brown spots the color of “white coffee”—that are usually present from birth or early childhood. They have smooth edges and are generally harmless.

    • What are the causes?

    For most spots, sunlight is the key trigger—UV rays stimulate melanin production and exacerbate virtually all types of pigmentation. Hormones (pregnancy, birth control), the skin’s natural aging process—during which pigment is deposited unevenly—and skin inflammation or irritation also play a role. For some people, a genetic predisposition and a more sensitive reaction to the sun are also factors. The development of spots is therefore usually the result of a combination of several factors at once.

    There are a number of methods that can be used to remove these spots, such as various cosmetic products, chemical peels, laser therapies, and intense pulsed light (IPL). The most effective technique is the use of an IPL device; at our clinic, we use the Ariane device.

    How does the IPL device work?

    The Ariane IPL device is one of the most advanced and effective devices that use IPL technology to remove pigment spots. The principle behind pigment spot removal is that the device emits a series of intense light flashes of various wavelengths, which penetrate the skin and selectively target the melanin in the pigment spots. This breaks down the melanin, causing the spots to gradually fade. The device is completely safe, as its light pulses are precise and targeted, minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding tissue.

    The IPL Treatment Process

    Treatment with the Ariane IPL device provides long-lasting results. During IPL treatment, it is necessary to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. For this reason, we do not perform the treatment during the summer months. After treatment, pigment spots will darken and then lighten or even disappear completely, resulting in a brighter and more even complexion. However, it is very important to follow the recommendations of the treatment staff and, if necessary, repeat the treatment depending on the type and severity of the pigment spots.

    How to Prevent Pigment Spots

    The appearance of new spots and the reappearance of previously treated ones can be largely prevented. The key is consistent sun protection:

    • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30–50 year-round, even in winter and on cloudy days.
    • Avoid the sun during midday hours and protect yourself with a hat or sunglasses.
    • Do not use a tanning bed—UV radiation significantly worsens pigmentation.
    • Take gentle care of your skin and avoid irritating it with harsh products to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
    • Be aware of hormonal changes—if you have melasma during pregnancy or while taking birth control, sun protection is twice as important.

      • Even after successful treatment, the spots may return without sun protection, so prevention is an ongoing part of your skincare routine.

      Is the treatment painful?

      Treatment with the Ariane IPL device is virtually painless; you may feel a slight pinch only in areas with thin skin after the light pulse is emitted. If you have a high sensitivity to pain, the pulse may be uncomfortable for you.

      Do I need to prepare for the treatment in any special way?

      The treatment cannot be performed on freshly tanned skin, whether from a tanning bed or the sun. Therefore, you must avoid direct sunlight before, during, and after the treatment.

      Who should not undergo this procedure?

      Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is not suitable for you if you are pregnant, have epilepsy, are undergoing chemotherapy, or have a pacemaker.

      Is treatment with an IPL device safe?

      Yes, treatment with the Ariane device is completely safe. The device complies with European and Canadian electrical safety standards. It is a French-made device certified to ISO 13485.

      Can I undergo the treatment in the summer?

      Pigment spot removal cannot be performed during the summer months. This is due to the risk of increased pigmentation.
